DNSbox
Nearly 200 million hosts on the internet have the need for a name instead of using arbitrary numbers which you may or may not remember. These names (like www.myname.com) are mapped to addresses (IP-address e.g. 192.168.1.1) using a nameserver. In many cases the name isn't just "yourname" but may be a called like a service or a common brand just to make it easier to find. The name has to be unique within your top level domain (e.g. .com, .us, .de, .fr) and the nameserver (dns = domain name service) makes your name known throughout the world.

Reserving and/or adding a domainname to this system is done via providers or registrars. Small offices get this service mostly in combination with webspace or mail addresses etc. This has to be done, as a nameserver needs 24/7 connection to the internet and has to follow technical specifications which are too complicated for small offices and sometimes even for bigger companies.

If you want to change your name service provider or registrar - no matter for what reasons - you as owner have to negotiate with your old provider about leaving (after finding a new one) as your entry has to be changed. If you can't proof that you are the owner you are lost, as well as if your provider is bankrupt or just denies cancelling your contract. This is the point where you may suffer from outages or service interuptions or even unresponsivness of your old provider as he may not be interested in customers leaving. You may be out of business with your homepages for some time.
